COTAK Membership

The Colorado Team Awareness Kit (COTAK) is developed and operated by the Center of Excellence for Advanced Technology Aerial Firefighting (CoE), the research and development branch of the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, located in the Colorado Department of Public Safety.

COTAK is available to the public safety community of Colorado at no cost. If you are a first responder at the local, county, tribal, state, or federal level and operate within the State of Colorado, COTAK is for you! Private sector providers of public safety services are eligible for COTAK as well with a sponsoring government agency’s approval.

What is COTAK?
COTAK is managed access to a TAK Server, which connects first responders location information across the state using the internet. COTAK is also a user management system hosted on this website. The TAK apps themselves are provided free of charge by the federal government, but they are not fully functional without a TAK server. COTAK is the way Colorado first responders authenticate themselves and connect with other first responders on the TAK apps. You may create an unlimited number of COTAK user accounts for your agency/team, and you may set up an unlimited number of channels which are used by your responders to filter whose locations they see in the apps.

COTAK membership also provides your first responders with access to training materials and a user community hosted on this website. The project team is available on a best effort basis to assist your agency in the process of adopting COTAK, and will respond to technical support requests and troubleshoot issues your responders encounter. Finally, on a best-effort basis the COTAK team will work with your agency to securely integrate data layers such as CAD or vehicle trackers into COTAK.

For location information to be valuable in your agency, adoption and ownership are imperative. Your responders will need to spend several minutes setting up the apps and receiving basic instruction on them through our training video curriculum. More advanced users may spend several hours learning all the features of their app, and all users will require regular proficiency reviews of the system. Finally, a handful of users from your agency will become agency administrators for COTAK, and these individuals will be responsible for creating and monitoring the accounts and channels used by your agency.
